It was certainly pioneering wings in mind and the recollection that the first aircraft to cross the North Atlantic landed on the waters of the archipelago that led a group of Azoreans to lay the foundation of SATA Air Açores by setting up Sociedade Açoriana de Estudos Aéreos on August 21st, 1941.

| Sata was set up as a private company but, in 1980, was turned into a state-owned company under the jurisdiction of the Regional Government of the Azores and the name was changed to Serviço Açoriano de Transportes Aéreos, E.P., maintaining the acronym SATA. SATA I n t e r n a t i o n a l |
Is a subsidiary company of SATA Air Açores, incensed to operate flights outside the archipelago.
SATA International is the end result of the transformation of OCEANAIR, a small charter airline, acquired by SATA Air Açores in 1994.
In 1995, after 50 years operating within the Azores islands, SATA started operating non regular charter flights for both national and foreign tour operators, using Boeing 737-300.
The development of this operation demonstrated the convenience of having an autonomous, separate company. On March 19th, 1998, the designation OCEANAIR was changed to SATA International and on June 17th the company was granted its Air Operator Certificate. The license and certification are in accordance with European Union regulations and the company is certified to operate regular and non-regular air services. |
| Today SATA International operates one Boeing 737-300, two Boeing 737-400 and two Airbus A310-300 |
