Sightseeing Tours of the Azores Islands

S. Miguel - Sete Cidades (Half Day)

Departure from the Hotel at 09h30 or 14h30, towards the Western part of the Island, where the Mountains and Lakes of Sete Cidades are situated. Drive through the Southwest road, along the coast through green pastures where cattle are grazing.
Stop at the Belvedere of Vista do Rei , one of the most important panoramic spots in the Island, where the blue and the green Lakes placed in an enormous volcanic crater can be seen.
Return to Ponta Delgada through a mountain road, on the Northwest part of the Island, stopping at Pico do Carvão where the North and South coast of the Island can be seen.
In the outskirts of Ponta Delgada, stop to visit Pineapple Plantations in greenhouses to observe how this tropical fruit grows. Pineapple liqueur can also be tasted at the Plantations.
Return to the Hotel at 12h30 or 17h30.

Departure from the Hotel, at 09h30 or 14h30, towards the North coast, to visit Ribeira Grande and its outskirts.
Short stop at Ribeira Seca to visit a renaissance fountain, once destroyed together with the settlement, in 1563 by a volcanic eruption.
The tour continues to Ribeira Grande for the characteristic XVII and XVIII century architecture of its buildings. Visit to the most significant monuments of the city. Drive on the mountain road to Lagoa do Fogo, a road with many bends, being all the way up like an enormous whirl.
Stop at the belvedere to admire the magnificent Lagoa do Fogo and its banks. From the top of the mountain North and South of the Island can be seen at the same time. Down the mountain, drive towards the waterfront to the village of Lagoa. On the way down, a beautiful panorama over the central and flatter part of the Island, with the ocean and the coastline to be seen at the same time, having the mountains of Sete Cidades lakes as a remote horizon.
Once on the waterfront, visit of a Ceramic Factory, to see how the local pottery is hand made.
Return to Ponta Delgada, and arrival at the Hotel at 13h00 or 17h30.

Departure from the Hotel at 09h30, towards the mountains of Sete Cidades. The tour will take the Southwest road, along the seashore, sprinkled, all over, by green pastures where the cows are grazing.
Stop at the Belvedere of Vista do Rei. A magnificent and breathtaking view over the lakes of Sete Cidades - the green lake and the blue lake - On the bottom of an enormous volcanic crater.
The tour continues through country roads of rare beauty. From the road you see long extensions of the North and South coasts, including the mountains in the central part of the Island.
Typical lunch at Restaurant “Cavalo Branco”, located in the area of Bretanha, settled once by fishermen of French origin.
After lunch visit to the pineapple plantations in green-houses to observe how this tropical fruit grows locally, inside green-houses. The visit ends with a taste of pineapple liqueur.
Return to the Hotel at 17h00.

Departure from Ponta Delgada through the North road to Ribeira Grande. Comfort Stop and visit of the Centre of Ribeira Grande, the second Town of the Island.
On the way to Furnas, stop at Sta. Iria Belvedere, to admire the North coast of the Island. Also en route, a Tea plantation and Tea Factory can be visited.
Another stop at Pico do Ferro Belvedere, where the visitors can see the fascinating sight of Furnas Valley, on the bottom of a crater, the village of Furnas and the lake, all surrounded by a luxuriant vegetation.
Visit of Furnas Valley, where volcanic phenomena still in activity can be seen, as well as the different springs of cold and hot minero-medicinal waters.
Lunch at Hotel Terra Nostra.
After lunch, visit to the 18th Century Terra Nostra Park, with its 20 hectares of different varieties of Plants and Trees from all over the world.
Departure to Ponta Delgada through the South road, along Furnas Lake, Vila Franca do Campo ( first Capital of the Island ) and Lagoa.
Return to Ponta Delgada around 18h00.

Departure from the Hotel at 09H00, driving to Lagoa on the South Coast side, towards Barrosa Mountain.On the way up, and closer to the top, both Coasts can be seen.
Stop on the top of the mountain to enjoy the view around. Drive down on the North side stopping at the Belvedere overlooking Lagoa de Fogo to admire, not only the beautiful and quite lake, but also the landscape of the surroundings. Drive then on, down to the town of Ribeira Grande, on the water front, which happens to have an excelent collection of Barroc Architecture from the XVII and XVIII centuries.
Stop in the town centre for a short break. Then on the North side of the Island to the Belvedere of Santa Iria, from where a great extension of the North coast can be seen. Next, and still on the North side, the drive continues to the Tea Plantations of Gorreana. Stop to see the tea bushes, on terraces. Driving through Achada das Furnas plateau, an area of pastures, the Belvedere of Pico do Ferro is reached, from where we can observe the biggest and oldest volcanic crater at the bottom of which lies Furnas Lake and the Spa of Furnas. It is one of the richest hydropolis of the world, since there are 22 different kinds of minero-medicinal waters on the valley.
Drive down to the village for lunch at Hotel Terra Nostra.
After Lunch, walk in the beautiful and romantic Park, the chance to observe so many botanical species, here from all over the world. In the Park, there is also a thermal swimming pool. From Terra Nostra Hotel, drive to the hot springs, still in the Valley of Furnas, volcanic phenomena unique on the world, and the most important of the Islands of Azores.
Return to Ponta Delgada, driving along Furnas Lake, Vila Franca, the first Capital of the Island, the beaches of Água d’Alto and Pópulo.
Arrival at Ponta Delgada at 17H30.

Departure from the Hotel at 09H00 in direction Lagoa, on the South Coast. On the way up to Pico da Barrosa, both Coasts of the Island can be seen.
Stop at Belvedere of Lagoa de Fogo, on the way down to the Capital of the North -Ribeira Grande.
Confort stop at Ribeira Grande, continuing to the West passing by Ribeira Seca, Rabo de Peixe, Calhetas and Fenais in the North coast road.
Lunch at Restaurant in Capelas. After Lunch return to the South Coast road in direction Sete Cidades.
Stop at the Belvedere of Vista do Rei.
Return to Ponta Delgada passing by Pico do Carvão and stop at its Belvedere where both North and South Coasts can be seen.
Arrival at 17H30.

Departure from the Hotel at 09h00, driving on the South road of the Island. Stop at Vila Franca, the first capital of the Island, and visit of S. Miguel’s Church, one of the oldest Church of the Island, built in Gothic Style. Inside the Church, a beautiful work of the altars in carved wood, covered by gold.
Drive further on, passing by Furnas towards Povoação, on the South-eastern part of the Island and the site where Portuguese navigators first came ashore. Stop to walk on the waterfront.
Drive on to Ponta da Madrugada, one of the most pleasant Belvederes of the Island, overlooking the ocean. The tour continues to the village of Nordeste. Lunch at a local Restaurant. Continue driving through several villages in a different landscape, on the foot of Pico da Vara, the highest mountain of the Island.
Return to Ponta Delgada along the North Side, and arrival around 19h00

Departure from the Hotel, visiting the Church of São Pedro on the road to Lagoinhas.
Visit to the Center of Santa Barbara and its Church.
From Santa Barbara to the West to see the Bay of São Lourenço, the ex-libris of Santa Maria.
Then to Santo Espírito visiting the Ethnographic Museum and the XVI Century church where, according to the legend, the very first Mass in the Azores was celebrated.
Return to Vila do Porto passing by Almagreira.
Lunch in a local Restaurant.
After Lunch a short visit to the surroundings of the Airport of Santa Maria in direction of Anjos, where Columbus attended a mass in the small chapel still existing.
Visit at the most important points of interest of Vila do Porto.
Return to the Hotel.

Departure from the Hotel at 09h30 or 14h30, towards Monte Brasil, passing by Angra do Heroísmo, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage. Stop at the view-point, on the top of Monte Brasil, a gorgeous view over the city and its outskirts. The tour continues through the Eastern side of the Island, on the seaside, with lovely natural swimming pools, carved on lava rocks and also several villages.
Stop at São Sebastião, the first settlement on this Island, and where the most characteristic “Império” can be seen, as well as the main church, dating back to the XV Century, worth visiting for its Gothic architecture and frescos that cover the inside walls.
Drive on to Praia da Vitória and stop for a short stroll, where one can feel its rich historical past reflected in a few monuments.
Then, further on through Serra do Cume, a very panoramic area over the ocean and Lages. Further on, a stop at Biscoitos, to visit the wine cellars and taste the local wine. Return to the Hotel and arrival at 12h30 or 17h30.

Departure at 09h00 from the Hotel towards Monte Brasil, passing by Angra do Heroísmo, the capital of the Island, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.
Stop at Pico das Cruzinhas Belvedere, on the top of Monte Brasil, the most beautiful view over the city and its outskirts. The tour continues through the Eastern side of the Island, showing the typical settlements and rural architecture contrasting with the fine green grass field surrounded by lava stonewalls.
Stop at São Sebastião, where the parish Church, built in Gothic Style, is one of the oldest of the Azores. Inside the Church, the observation of old frescos are worth a visit. Nearby, there is a very interesting “Império”, connected to the most traditional religious festivities, not only on Terceira, but all over the Azores, the Holy Ghost ( Espírito Santo).
Lunch is served in this village, in a local restaurant. After lunch, drive to Praia da Vitória and stop for a short stroll.
Then, further on through the inner road passing by Serra do Cume, with beautiful sights over Lages and the Ocean.
Drive on to Biscoitos, through the area of wild bulls used on the very well known bullfights of Terceira (Touradas à Corda), which take place in the streets of the villages. Stop at Biscoitos, a wine area, and visit to a wine cellar, where a taste of the wine is a must.
Return to Angra do Heroísmo, driving on a different road, and arrival at the Hotel at 17h30.

Departure from Santa Cruz and drive to Monte d’Ajuda. Stop to enjoy a view over Santa Cruz. On the way, stop to see wind-mills, ex-libris of the Island, and the vineyards, making altogether this Island one of the most charming landscapes of the Azores.
Further on, stop at Vila da Praia, an interesting fishing village, and on to Carapacho, Spa, located in a beautiful landscape.
Drive on to Caldeira and Furna do Enxofre. This unique geological formation, is one of the most interesting spots of the Azores.
Lunch at Luz.
The drive continues to Guadalupe, Victoria and further to the North, returning to Santa Cruz.
Once in town, a stroll and visit of the main church, where besides Flemish paintings, many artistic details are worth a visit.

Departure from Hotel towards the Western part of the Island - Ponta dos Rosais, visiting a Forestry
Park and Cheese Factory.
Then cross the Island to the Northside to enjoy the view over the so-called Fajãs - flat laud at sea
level, resulting from the erosion of cliffs, where people live profiting a micro-climate.
Fajã do Ouvidor and Fajã dos Cubres are the main interesting points.
From Norte Pequeno, drive to the South side towards Calheta. Stop for Lunch.
After Lunch, stop at Manadas to see the beautiful Church of Stª. Bárbara an XVIII Century Barroco Style Church.
Then to Urzelina and visit the remaining tower of a church buried under lava from the eruption of 1808, and surrounded by fruit trees and other vegetation.
Return to Velas and walk in the centre to see the most interesting points in the town. Return to the Hotel.

Departure from Horta Harbour at 07h45 by ferry boat to the Island of Pico.
Arrival at Madalena at 08h15 and beginning of the tour around the Island.
Stop at Arcos do Cachorro, impressive rock formations where the ocean performs an exciting show of sound and colour.
Drive on to the area of Mistérios ( Misteries ), amounts of spread lava from early volcanic eruptions. From São Roque, drive on an inner road, crossing the Island to the south, area where endemic vegetation can be seen, such as Azorean Juniper, Azorean Mahogany and Laurel Trees.
Lunch en route. After lunch optional visit to the Whalers Museum.
On the way back to Madalena, stop to visit an Handicraft Exhibition, a Cheese Factory and a Wine Cellar.
Return to Madalena to take the ferry boat at 16h45 back to Horta.
Arrival in Horta half an hour later.

Departure from the Hotel at Madalena at 09h30, through the North road. Stop at Arcos do Cachorro, impressive rock formations where the ocean performs an exciting show of sound and colour.

Lunch en route. After lunch optional visit to the Whalers Museum.
On the way back, stop to visit an Handicraft Exhibition, a Cheese Factory and a Wine Cellar.
Return to Madalena around 17h30.

Departure from the Hotel at 09h30 or 14h30, driving through the town of Horta, unique on the Azores, because of its cosmopolitan yacht harbour, which is the encountering point of yachts sailing from all over the world, in their transatlantic voyages.
Stop at Espalamaca Belvedere to have a sight over Horta, the harbour and all the surroundings.
Then passing by Largo Jaime Melo, arrival at Caldeira, a large Crater in the central part of the Island, one of its most beautiful landscape and natural protected area because of its original vegetation.
Drive further on towards Capelinhos, a new land resulting from the marine volcanic eruption occurred in the ocean in 1957 / 58.
Return to Horta along the coast and arrival at the Hotel at 12h30 or 17h30.

Departure from the Hotel at 09h00, driving through the town of Horta, unique on the Azores because of its cosmopolitan yacht harbour, which is the encountering point of the yachts sailing from all over the world, in their transatlantic voyages.
Stop at Espalamaca Belvedere to have a very beautiful sight over Horta, the harbour and all the surroundings. Arrival at Caldeira in the central part of the Island, one of the its most beautiful landscape and a natural protected area because of its original vegetation. Drive further on towards Capelinhos, a new land resulting from the marine volcanic eruption occurred in the ocean
in 1957 / 58. Lunch at Varadouro, a Spa and summer Resort, with interesting natural swimming pools. Return to Horta, along the coast, stopping at Ponta Furada. Arrival at the Hotel at 17h30.

Departure from the Hotel towards the Northeastern part of the Island to Ponta dos Cedros Belvedere.
Stop there to enjoy the view over Corvo Island.
Afterwards, drive down towards Lajes, stopping for a break.
The drive continues along the Southwest, stopping at Rocha dos Bordões, curious basalt formations, which are unique on the Azores.
Lunch at Santa Cruz.
Next, the drive goes on to Fajãzinha and Fajã Grande, very interesting places, at sea level.
On the way back, taking the cross-road, the lake area is reached, which are the most impressive landscapes of the Island, specially when the Hydrangeas are in bloom.
Return to Santa Cruz and to the Hotel.
